Standard First Aid

Standard first aid is the most popular course offered for participants looking for comprehensive first aid and CPR training in Canada. Over 10,000 standard first aid providers exist in Canada. The goal of all of these providers is to prevent harm, promote recovery and provide aid. Participants will learn a variety of skills and have the option of selecting from a variety of CPR level’s. Re-certification courses are available for standard first aid.

CPR level’s Available with Standard First Aid:

All standard first aid courses, regardless of provider, teach participants basic CPR skills first. CPR level “C” training comes standard with this basic first aid course, however, all of our training partners provide candidates the option of partnering with a higher level CPR course, CPR “HCP”. Participants must receive CPR training when enrolled in a standard first aid course. Candidates can not receive only first aid training.

Participants enrolled in standard first aid training will receive training and certification in the use of automated external defibrillators (AED). AED training has become a essential component to any CPR and / or first aid course. Using a AED increases the chances of survival for victims of cardiac arrest by as much as 800%. When participants successfully complete standard first aid training the will receive a certificate that acknowledges

training in the use of AED’s.

Prerequisites:

Our training partners require that participants be at least 12 years of age prior to attending the standard first aid course. Participants are not required to do any pre-course assignments or reading prior to attending the course. Participants will receive a St Mark James training manual on arrival of the first day of the course.

Standard First Aid Course Content:

Participants will learn a variety of different first aid topics. The following is a list of some of the basic first aid topics covered in the course:

  • Check, Call, Care system developed by St Mark James for emergency scene management.
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and automated external defibrillator training (AED) for adult, children and infant victims.
  • Treating for shock.
  • Treating victims of cardiovascular diseases such as heart attacks, angina, stroke and transient ischemic attacks. Participants will also receive basic training in preventing cardiovascular disease.
  • Participants will learn to treat and recognize patients of respiratory emergencies such as anaphylaxis (allergic reactions), aspiration, hyperventilation and asthma.
  • Candidates will learn to treat and recognize patients of burns, poisons, fractures, head and neck injuries, suspected spinal injuries, major external and internal bleeding, symptoms and conditions of heat stress and cold stress, diabetic emergencies and sudden medical emergencies such as seizures.

First Aid and CPR Award / Certification:

Participants that successfully complete the written exam and all the skills components will receive a St Mark James standard first aid, CPR and AED certificate that is valid for 3 years. The level of CPR training selected by the participant will also be displayed on the certificate. The award meets Health Canada regulations and other government and legislative standards for first aid and CPR certification. The award is issued as a wallet sized certificate, however, candidates may opt for a wall sized certificate for a small additional fee. It is important for successful participants not to deface the award, laminate or write on it as it devalues the certificate. All lost awards must be reclaimed through St Mark James. When candidates complete the course all certification information is sent to St Mark James for implementation into the national database. Certificates are nationally accredited and valid throughout Canada. Participants may be required to re-certify awards at a earlier date based on workplace policy or school policy. Standard First Aid Class Prices:

Our training partners, located throughout Canada, offer standard first aid training at the lowest prices in your region. Prices vary from 110 to 135 dollars depending on your area. Course rates are flat fees with no hidden fees. Fees include taxes, certification fees and St Mark James first aid manuals.

Classroom or Private Courses:

Our training partners give candidates the option of selecting either a private course or attending a classroom training session at one of the training centers. Standard First Aid Course Length:

Standard first aid training ranges in length depending on the level of CPR training included, number of participants, and ultimately the instructor. Courses range in length from 14 to 20 hours. Standard first is typically completed within two full days, however, our providers offer weeknight courses that span 3 nights (4 to 5 hours per night). The knowledge and skill strength of the candidates in the course can also play a role in determining the length of the course. The minimum required class length of a standard first aid course, excluding breaks, is 14 hours.
