CPR training courses in Canada
CPR training courses in Canada

CPR training is a essential component of any first aid course. St Mark James does not allow for any first aid course to exclude CPR training. Millions of people die in North America each year from cardiac related emergencies in which prompt CPR would have drastically increased their chances of survival. All St Mark James CPR courses included training in the use of automated external defibrillators (AED). AED’s play a crucial role in advanced rescue techniques including with St Mark James rescuers, paramedics and hospital staff. Using a AED significantly increases the chances of survival. Candidates can take CPR training either with a first aid course or in a stand-alone CPR class. Participants registering with credible CPR providers in Canada have the option of selecting from 4 different levels of CPR training. All courses meet Health Canada regulations and most meet provincial government and legislative standards for CPR training. Candidates will be able to select their region from this page and be directed to a St Mark James CPR provider. All of our training partners have the highest standards in CPR training at competitive prices.

CPR Courses Details

Updated CPR Standards:

CPR and AED courses offered through St Mark James follow the most up to date CPR standards. The International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR), a world leader in CPR statistics and analysis, provides St Mark James with the most up to date data for cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Approximately every 4 years St Mark James updates its CPR standards based on the recommendations provided by ILCOR. The latest updates happened at the end of 2011. All major and credible CPR providers in Canada update their CPR standards almost simultaneously and they all follow the same recommendations.

Latest Updates:

The latest CPR updates rolled out in 2011. CPR standards continue to improve recovery statistics while making CPR standards more simple and straightforward. The future of CPR training has been moving in a direction of simplicity to help candidates successfully do effective CPR in those intense moments when it is required.

AED Training:

Participants enrolled in stand-alone CPR courses will receive practice and training in the use of automated external defibrillators (AED). Using a AED dramatically increases the chances of revival for patients in cardiac arrest. AED’s are simple and straightforward machines that help guide participants through their use and through CPR on the victim. AED training has become a essential component of any first aid and / or CPR course.

Level’s of CPR Training:

CPR level’s are defined by who the age of the patients the rescuers will learn to treat and the equipment available to patients. The following is a description of the material that is incorporated into each level of CPR training. Each higher level of CPR training includes the course content of the level before it, for example, all the material from CPR level “A” is included in CPR level “C” (the higher level).

CPR Level “A”

CPR level “A” is the most basic

CPR course available. In this course participants will learn basic CPR techniques for adult and child victims. This is a 3 to 4 hour course in which candidates will also receive AED training. The following is the course content of a CPR level “A” class:

  • Participants will learn about the first aider’s role in any rescue scenario.
  • Participants will learn and understand St Mark James check, call, care system of rescue assessment and patient treatment.
  • Candidates will learn about the H.A.I.N.E.S. recovery position which is especially useful for breathing and unconscious patients.
  • Candidates will learn to recognize and treat adult and child patients that are choking with mild or severe obstructed airways.
  • Participants will learn about when and how to assist patients with medications and the legal implications.
  • Participants will learn to recognize and treat patients with circulatory emergencies such as Heart Attacks, Stroke, Transient Ischemic Attacks (TIA), and Strokes.
  • Participants will learn to effective and efficiently perform CPR and use a AED on patients.
  • Candidates will learn to treat patients with deadly bleeding.
No re-certification courses are available for CPR level “A”. Participants wanting to renew certification in CPR level “A” must re-take the course. CPR level “A” comes standard with emergency first aid but it can also be partnered with a standard first aid course.

CPR level “B”

CPR level “B” is no longer provided as a stand-alone CPR course through St Mark James. CPR level “B” was defined by the fact that it taught candidates rescue techniques for adult and child victims. As CPR has continued to simplify, CPR standards for adult and child rescues have almost become identical which has removed the need for a CPR level “B” course. Participants will only see CPR level “B” training when taking a St Mark James emergency or standard childcare first aid course.

CPR level “C”

CPR and AED classes

CPR level “C” is the most popular stand-alone CPR course offered through St Mark James. It takes approximately 4 to 5 hours to complete this course. It is the most comprehensive and basic CPR course available. CPR level “C” is defined as the CPR course that teaches participants CPR rescue techniques for adult, child and infant victims. CPR level “C” includes all of the material taught in CPR level “A” and adds additional information such as:

  • Recognizing and treating conscious and unconscious obstructed airway infant patients.
  • Recognizing and treating infant patients that need cardiopulmonary resuscitation and the use of a automated external defibrillator with pediatric pads.

St Mark James Re-certification courses are available for CPR level “C”. CPR level “C” typically comes standard with a standard first aid course but it can also be partnered with a emergency first aid course.

CPR level “HCP”

CPR level “HCP”, also known as CPR level “C” for health care providers, is the most advanced basic CPR course available to Canadians. It takes approximately 5 to 6 hours to complete this course. This course is designed for people that have access to trained backup and advanced CPR equipment such as bag valve masks. Participants enrolled in this course will learn about all of the content from CPR level “A” and level “C” and will learn additional information including:

  • Recognizing and treating suspected spinal injury patients using a jaw thrust method.
  • When and how to do a pulse check on a patient.
  • Recognizing and treating patients with a no breathing and with a pulse.
  • When and how to treat patients using a bag-valve mask.
  • How to do two-person trained CPR for adult, child and infant patients.

St Mark James Training offers re-certification courses for candidates that have completed a CPR “HCP” course within the past 3 years.  CPR “HCP” can be partnered with a standard first aid or emergency first aid course.

St Mark James CPR courses meet Health Canada requirements, government and legislative standards for most provinces. Participants will be issued a wallet sized certificate. Participants should not write on or deface the certificate in any way as it causes the certificate to be void. Participants should also avoid laminating the certificate. Candidates can also receive a wall sized certificate for a small additional cost. St Mark James first aid and CPR instructors will send the candidates information to St Mark James to implemented into St Mark James database. If a candidates misplaces his or her card he or she can contact St Mark James to be re-issued a certificate. Training partners can not re-issue lost certificates.

CPR Tips:

The following are some basic tips when performing CPR:

  • Push Hard and Push Fast – Chest compression’s should be done on adults forcefully and quickly at a pace of over 100 compression’s per minute.
  • Only 3/10 Canadians have received any CPR training.
  • 25% of Cardiac Arrest Patients are under the age of 18.
  • Too much air during ventilation IS a bad thing. Too much air increases the chances of regurgitation and other complications while performing CPR.
  • The average person gets tired and starts doing CPR ineffectively after just 2 minutes. Makes sure you learn to do CPR efficiently and effectively when taking a CPR course.
  • Don’t be afraid of using a AED. They make CPR easier and they are exceptionally simple to use. Turn on the machine and follow the voice prompts.
  • One of the most forgotten steps in CPR training that St Mark James instructors complain about is that participants forget to contact EMS. Without quick emergency medical response the chances of survival for cardiac arrest patients is drastically diminished.
  • The quicker a rescuer can start CPR the better. For every minute that goes by without CPR, a cardiac arrest patient’s chances of survival are diminished by 10%.
